July 16, 2009CBO Director: Health Reform Bills Would Weaken Economy
Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf today said the health reform measures being drafted in Congress would worsen the nation’s budget projections and drive the country more deeply into debt, according to The Washington Post.
Elmendorf, responding to questions from the Senate Budget Committee, said bills do not propose “the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount.”
“On the contrary,” Elmendorf said, “the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility for health-care costs,” the Post reports.
