Single payer health insurance IS the answer.just like Canada.we spend 400 billion on paper work(35 % of our health budjet Canada spends 1 % on it)still 47 million people have no health coverage here, same medications cost many times more here than in canada, why? 90% is defensive medicine here not real patient care, all parameters of health efficiency like infant mortality, prenatal care we are almost dead last,if there is no tort reform in health care and other industry too soon all nonemergency health care, all industry will shift to other nations.

No universal health care, it doesn't, and hasn't worked for other countries period.
Yes to tort reform. There are lawyers whose only reason for breathing is to railroad Doctors.
Yes to complete portability. Health insurance should be managed just like car insurance, buy what you need and when, and from who. Must be able to shop across state lines.
Must make medicaid a temporary solution
Every child has two parents regardless of marital status and parents should have the responsibility for their care and well being, the burden shouldn't be upon only one parent or the State or Fed Gov. Courts to enforce court orders on child support and providing health insurance, could be a place to start.
A persons health should be shared only with the provider of choice and medical records should remain with that provider until the patient requests a release of information, not the record . The record itself is the property of the provider just like the records in any other business.

The real crime here us that the best solution for health insurance (and that is what we are talking about here, not health "care") is almost 100% free and the bulk of it could take just days to craft as law and days to enact.

1. Tort reform. Loser pays and pain & suffering caps of $250,000.00. You insurance now pays for ridiculous awards.

2. Make health insurance completely portable. No matter what happens to your job you still have the same insurance as long as you want to have it.

3. Make it possible to purchase insurance across state lines. Let us have competition between thousands of insurers rather than a handful.

4. End state and federal mandates. Mandates that you don't need (birth control for a man? Viagra for 25 year old female?) cost you hundreds of dollars each month. End them. Let people buy what they need, it will be cheaper for everybody.

5. Make Medicaid a temporary bootstrap solution for those of us who get into a situation where they need help.

Done. Problem solved and no big, omnipresent government "solution" needed.
